When designers plan office spaces, they tend to expect they will be quiet once they are in use. They do not take into account the noise that will almost certainly ensue. This poses a very difficult problem for the workers who must function in those areas. The constant chattering of one’s colleagues carries through open-plan offices, resulting in office noise, distractions, stress, and a loss of both creativity and productivity.

Many workplaces are now utilizing sound masking in order to help their employees deal with the distractions of a noisy office. Sound masking provides verbal privacy, although it can’t completely eliminate all noise. Many companies have found this method quite beneficial in helping workers become more relaxed and productive.

Why is sound masking so effective? It uses something called white noise to make it difficult to separate individual sounds, such as conversations, from each other. White noise is a constant low noise played in the background in a room such as an office. With it, you can mask other noises so that they are not distinguishable from one another.

State of the art technology is giving office workers unique new ways to guard their private conversations. Acoustical treatments like the most current “direct field” systems can be mounted into the ceiling, making inconspicuous noises which prevent conversations from being overheard.

Individual employees can also choose to get white noise generators. These machines are able to block out the steady background noise of a busy office with relaxing and pleasing sounds such as waterfalls, waves, rain, or rolling rivers. These types of sounds have been proven to help increase a worker’s productivity through relaxation and focusing concentration.

It does not matter how you cover ambient sound in your office space, just make sure that it is done. There is no question that feet, telephones and voices lower worker productivity. Thus, increasing the “white noise ratio” makes for both a happier and more profitable work force.

The designer anticipates it to be silent during usage while designing an office. They must consider the fact that the noise will be generated. It creates a hard situation for the staff which has to work there. The offices which are built on open-plan designs can not reduce noise. This generates office noise, interruption, tension. Moreover it severely damages creation and efficiency and impacts speech privacy. What do you do to cope with a loud work environment? Many offices solve the problem by using sound masking. It might not eliminate noise altogether, but it does help by cutting down verbal noise.
