With the recent recalls of dog and cat products that were found to have harmful ingredients and chemicals, many pet owners want to know how to avoid such scares while feeding their dogs only the best pet food. And this choice can be a confusing one, with dozens of brands and hundreds of variants on the market. What can a caring owner safely feed their beloved pets?

First, a pet owner should educate themselves on how to choose a good commercial pet food. There is a lot of information available on the internet about choosing ingredients, vitamins and nutritional value. Dog food ratings can also help to compare similarly priced foods. However there is only one good way to ensure that our best friends receive only the freshest and healthiest ingredients.

Making your own dog food may take more time and effort than buying it pre-made. However, it is usually cheaper and the health benefits to your pets may be absolutely worth the extra time and effort. Here is one simple homemade dog food recipe that a conscientious pet owner might choose to prepare for a beloved canine companion.

First, stir-fry one cup of ground beef in canola oil. Then, combine the cooked meat with two boiled eggs, and 1/2 cup each of cooked oatmeal, pureed green beans, pureed carrots (baby food in jars can be used), then add 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese and serve to your pampered pet at room temperature. For extra vitamins and minerals, a good pet supplement may be added to the mix.

Remember to switch pet foods gradually, by mixing larger and larger percentages of the new food with the old. Also, avoid feeding cooked bones, as these may splinter and cause problems in the digestive tract. Other foods that should be avoided in a canine diet are chocolate, garlic and onions, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins, and avocadoes.

Using this, and many other dog food recipes available on the internet and in libraries, a pet owner can make sure that his pooch is eating a complete, balanced diet, free of additives and harmful chemicals that are often used in pet food. Soon, obvious improvements in your dog’s energy levels and coat, even his teeth can be noticed, proving what a healthy diet, prepared with love can do.
